Mangaluru — It was a night of roaring rain and rising fear. By dawn, parts of the coastal city lay bruised — homes waterlogged, walls cracked, and in Pandeshwar, roofs lay crumbled where once families slept.

After days of relentless downpour, several localities in Mangaluru — Pandeshwar, Ashok Nagar, Adumaroli, and others — witnessed scenes of devastation. Mud-soaked walls and shattered furniture told silent stories of families jolted awake by the fury of the monsoon.

On Saturday, MLC Ivan D’Souza and MLA D Vedavyas Kamath visited the hardest-hit areas. Their visit wasn’t ceremonial. It was urgent.

“We can’t wait for paperwork when people are standing ankle-deep in what used to be their living rooms,” D’Souza told reporters after visiting Pandeshwar ward, where four houses had collapsed entirely. “Immediate relief must reach those families today — not tomorrow, not next week.”

Relief on the Way, But Is It Enough?

Accompanied by local officials, the leaders surveyed damaged homes and instructed the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) engineers to prepare a detailed assessment report.

According to D’Souza, nearly 90 homes in the city suffered varying degrees of damage — from flooding and landslides to full structural failure.

“Let’s not forget,” he added, “we’re not just talking about walls and roofs. These are people’s lives, their savings, their safety.”

District Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, who was also briefed, contacted DC Darshan HV, urging prompt preventive steps to avoid further casualties as more rain is expected.

What stood out in this relief visit wasn’t just the words, but the urgency. The image of D’Souza standing inside a neon-lit flooded home, speaking directly to families, sparked a small wave of empathy across social media.

The Road Ahead

There’s hope — but also fatigue. Residents have begun pumping water out, salvaging what they can. But with more rains forecast this week, officials fear another round of damage unless precautionary infrastructure is immediately reinforced.

“We need lasting solutions,” said a local resident in Adumaroli. “Compensation is good, but give us drainage that works. Give us homes that don’t sink in July.”

D’Souza echoed the sentiment: “The state must not only compensate but act. And fast.”
