Bantwal murder Triggers Communal Tensions: Forum Demands Action Against Hindutva activists

Mangaluru, May 30, 2025The brutal killing of Abdul Rahiman in Bantwal has ignited a wave of communal tension in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district. In response, the Muslim Samaja Bantwal has called for stringent action against certain Hindutva activists, accusing them of inciting violence through provocative speeches.

On May 27, Abdul Rahiman, a 32-year-old pickup driver and secretary of the Koltmajalu Juma Masjid, was attacked and killed near Kuriyala village while unloading sand. Another individual, Kalandar Shafi, sustained serious injuries during the assault and is currently hospitalized. Eyewitnesses reported that a group of assailants armed with sharp weapons carried out the attack.

Forum's Allegations and Demands

Leaders of the Muslim Samaja Bantwal, including President KH Aboobakker and General Secretary Haneef Khan, have alleged that Hindutva activists—specifically Bharat Kumdel, Sharan Pumpwell, Srikant Shetty, and Shivananda Mendon—have been delivering inflammatory speeches that incite violence against Muslims. They demand that these individuals be named in the First Information Report (FIR) and that the investigation be handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) or a Special Investigation Team (SIT). The forum also calls for the application of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Karnataka Control of Organised Crimes Act (KCOCA) against the accused.

Government Response

In the wake of the incident, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has ordered a crackdown on individuals involved in communal violence and has emphasized the need for maintaining harmony in the region. He has also discussed the situation with senior leaders and is considering the formation of an anti-communal task force to address the rising tensions.

Police Action

The police have arrested three individuals—Deepak (21), Prithviraj (21), and Chinthan (19)—in connection with Abdul Rahiman's murder. Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack and to identify any additional suspects

Community Impact

The incident has led to widespread unrest in the region, with prohibitory orders imposed to prevent further escalation. The Muslim community has expressed deep concern over the safety of its members and has called for immediate and decisive action to restore peace and order.

Conclusion

The murder of Abdul Rahiman has not only resulted in a tragic loss of life but has also highlighted the deep-seated communal tensions in Dakshina Kannada. As investigations continue, the community awaits justice and the restoration of harmony in the region
